Chapter 10: Happiness Found

Emma’s first week as a freelancer was both exhilarating and terrifying. She spent her days reaching out to old clients, updating her portfolio, and applying to freelance jobs on design websites. Her evenings were spent with Chloe, drinking wine and talking about their futures.

“I’m so proud of you,” Chloe said one night, pouring them each a glass of red. “You’re taking control of your life, and it’s amazing to watch.”

“It feels good,” Emma admitted, swirling the wine in her glass. “But I’m also scared. What if I can’t make enough money to pay rent? What if Liam and Sophia are right, and I’m not talented enough to make it on my own?”

“Hey,” Chloe said, reaching across the table to squeeze her hand. “You’re one of the most talented designers I’ve ever met. Liam and Sophia are just trying to make you doubt yourself because they’re jealous that you’re moving on without them.”

Emma smiled, her eyes filling with tears. Chloe always knew exactly what to say to make her feel better.

The next morning, Emma woke up to an email from Ethan Hayes: “I heard through the grapevine that you’re going freelance. That’s amazing, Emma! I wanted to ask – would you be interested in helping me rebrand my startup? We’re looking to pivot, and I think your style would be perfect for our new direction.”

Emma’s heart skipped a beat. This was exactly the break she needed – a real project, with a real client, from someone who actually believed in her talent. She typed back immediately: “I’d love to! When would you like to meet?”

“How about tomorrow at 2 PM at my office? I’ll send you the address.”

Ethan sent the address, and Emma saved it to her calendar. She spent the rest of the day researching Ethan’s startup – a tech company called Nexus that was developing AI-powered productivity tools. They had a small team but big ambitions, and they were already making waves in the industry.

The next day, Emma drove to Ethan’s office, her hands shaking on the steering wheel. She had dressed carefully – wearing the yellow sweater again, paired with dark jeans and comfortable shoes. She wanted to look professional but also like herself.

Ethan’s office was in a converted warehouse in the hipster district of Seattle. The space was open and industrial, with exposed brick walls and plenty of natural light. Emma loved it immediately – it was exactly the kind of creative environment she thrived in.

“Emma!” Ethan called when he saw her, coming over to greet her with a warm smile. “So glad you could make it.”

“Thanks for inviting me,” Emma said, shaking his hand. “I’m really excited about this opportunity.”

“Let’s sit down and talk about what I’m looking for,” Ethan said, leading her to a small conference room. He explained that Nexus was pivoting from B2B software to consumer apps, and they needed a complete rebrand to reflect that change.

“Our current brand is too corporate, too boring,” Ethan said, showing Emma their website. “We want something fresh, modern, approachable. Something that appeals to everyday people, not just businesses.”

Emma nodded, taking notes as Ethan explained his vision. She could feel her creative juices flowing, the ideas already starting to form in her mind. This was exactly what she had been missing at Sterling Design Agency – the chance to work on something meaningful, something that would make a real difference.

“I think I can help you with that,” Emma said, her confidence growing. “I have some ideas for a new color palette, logo, and website design that will reflect your new direction.”

Ethan’s eyes lit up. “I love that enthusiasm. Tell me more.”

They spent the next hour brainstorming, and Emma felt more alive than she had in years. Ethan listened to her ideas with genuine interest, asking questions and offering feedback. Unlike Liam, who had always dismissed her work as “just graphic design,” Ethan treated her like a creative equal.

“I think we’ve got a great foundation to work with,” Ethan said as their meeting came to an end. “I’d love to hire you for this project, Emma. I’ll send over a contract and the project details by the end of the day.”

Emma couldn’t believe it – she had her first freelance client, and it was a dream project. “Thank you, Ethan. This means everything to me.”

“You’re welcome,” he said, standing up and shaking her hand again. “I believe in you, Emma. I always have.”

Emma walked out of the warehouse feeling like she was walking on air. She was finally doing something that mattered to her, and she had someone who actually appreciated her talent.

But little did she know, Liam and Sophia were watching.

“She’s meeting with Ethan Hayes,” Sophia said, showing Liam a photo she’d taken of Emma leaving the warehouse. “He’s hiring her to rebrand his startup.”

Liam’s face darkened. “Ethan Hayes? That guy who’s been trying to poach her from Sterling for years?”

“The same one,” Sophia said, scrolling through Nexus’s website. “This could be bad for us, Liam. If Emma starts working with high-profile clients like Ethan, people are going to start asking questions about why you left her.”

“We need to stop this,” Liam said, his voice low and dangerous. “Ethan has a reputation for being stubborn, but everyone has a weakness. We just need to find his.”

Sophia nodded, a cruel smile playing on her lips. “I might know someone who can help with that. A contact in the industry who knows all the gossip. Maybe we can find something to use against Ethan – something to make him think twice about hiring Emma.”

As they plotted, Emma was celebrating her good fortune with Chloe. They were sitting on the couch in their apartment, drinking wine and eating takeout, when Emma’s phone buzzed.

“It’s Ethan,” she said, opening the message. “He sent over the contract!”

“Let me see!” Chloe said, leaning over to read. “Oh my god, Em – this is amazing! He’s paying you double what you were making at Sterling!”

Emma’s jaw dropped. “Double? That’s… that’s incredible.”

“See?” Chloe said, hugging her. “You’re talented, Emma. People are starting to recognize that. Liam and Sophia are going to be so jealous when they find out.”

Emma frowned. “I don’t want them to find out. Not yet, anyway. I want to build my career on my own terms, without them getting involved.”

Chloe nodded. “I get that. But you can’t hide forever, Em. Eventually, they’re going to find out. And when they do, you’re going to show them that you don’t need them to succeed.”

Emma smiled, feeling a surge of confidence. Chloe was right – she didn’t need Liam or Sophia to succeed. She had talent, she had drive, and she had people who believed in her.

The next morning, Emma signed the contract and sent it back to Ethan. He replied immediately: “Great! Let’s schedule our first brainstorming session for next week. I’m really excited to see what you come up with.”

Emma spent the rest of the week diving into the project, researching competitor brands, sketching logo concepts, and experimenting with color palettes. She worked late into the night, fueled by excitement and determination. For the first time in years, she didn’t feel bored or uninspired – she felt alive.

But Liam and Sophia were still plotting. Sophia had reached out to an old contact from her influencer days – a gossip blogger who loved digging up dirt on tech entrepreneurs.

“Ethan Hayes has a reputation for being ruthless,” Sophia said, scrolling through the blog post on her phone. “But there’s one thing nobody knows – he fired his last designer because she allegedly stole his ideas. There’s no proof, but the rumor is out there.”

Liam smiled. “Perfect. We can use that to our advantage. If we plant the story that Emma stole Ethan’s ideas, not only will she lose the project, but she’ll also lose her reputation in the industry.”

“We need to be careful,” Sophia said. “If Ethan finds out we’re behind it, he could come after us. We need to make sure it looks like an anonymous tip.”

“I know people,” Liam said, his eyes gleaming. “People who can make sure the story gets out there without tracing it back to us.”

As they hatched their plan, Emma was completely unaware of the danger she was in. She was working on the most exciting project of her career, surrounded by supportive friends and colleagues. She had no idea that Liam and Sophia were about to launch a campaign to destroy her reputation before it even really started.

And they were just getting started.
