What happens when you intentionally choose kindness for a week? I tried it—and the results surprised me in ways I didn’t see coming.
Why I Decided to Try This Experiment
Life had been feeling… routine.
Wake up, check emails, scroll social media, work, eat, sleep—repeat. I wasn’t unhappy, but I also wasn’t inspired. Everything felt a little too predictable, a little too self-focused.
One night, I came across a simple idea: Do one random act of kindness every day for a week.
It sounded easy. Almost too easy.
But I had a feeling it might shift something—not just for others, but for me too.
So I committed: 7 days, 7 intentional acts of kindness, no expectations.
The Rules I Set for Myself
To keep things simple and authentic, I created a few rules:
- Each act had to be intentional (not something I would normally do)
- No posting about it on social media
- No expecting anything in return
- Keep it small, realistic, and doable
I didn’t want this to become a performance. I wanted it to be real.
Day 1: Coffee for a Stranger
I started with something simple.
At a local coffee shop, I paid for the drink of the person behind me in line. I didn’t wait for a reaction—I just smiled and left.
But as I walked out, I heard a surprised “Wait… really?”
That moment stayed with me all day.
Impact:
I felt lighter. Not because I spent money, but because I stepped outside my usual bubble.
Day 2: A Message That Meant Something
I texted an old friend I hadn’t spoken to in months.
Instead of the usual “How are you?”, I wrote:
“Hey, I was thinking about you today. You’ve always been one of the most supportive people in my life. Just wanted to say thank you.”
They replied within minutes.
And they didn’t just say thanks—they opened up about how much they needed to hear that.
Impact:
I realized kindness isn’t always about strangers. Sometimes, it’s about showing up for the people we’ve overlooked.
