Chapter 10: Happiness Found

Emma woke up with a headache that had been her constant companion for the past week. Since discovering Liam and Sophia’s campaign to destroy her reputation, she had been working frantically to find a solution. But every lead she followed turned into a dead end, every client she reached out to seemed suspicious of her motives.

“You look terrible,” Chloe said, pouring her a cup of coffee. “Have you slept at all this week?”

“Not really,” Emma admitted, taking the coffee with trembling hands. “I’ve been up all night trying to figure out who’s behind these rumors. I know it’s Liam and Sophia, but I can’t prove it.”

Chloe sighed, setting her own coffee cup down on the table. “Emma, we need a plan. You can’t just keep going like this – you’re going to burn out before we even get started.”

“I know,” Emma said, running a hand through her hair. “But what can I do? Every time I try to defend myself, it just makes me look guilty. If I deny the rumors, people think I’m lying. If I ignore them, people think I must be hiding something.”

“Then we need to turn the tables,” Chloe said, her expression hardening. “If Liam and Sophia are spreading rumors about you, we need to spread rumors about them. Fair’s fair, right?”

Emma hesitated. She didn’t want to stoop to their level, didn’t want to become like them. But she also couldn’t let them destroy her without a fight.

“What kind of rumors?” Emma asked, curious despite herself.

Chloe grinned. “I’ve been thinking about this. Liam’s always been obsessed with his reputation as a successful real estate agent, right? What if people found out he’s actually broke? That he was using you to pay his bills while he pretended to be successful?”

Emma’s eyes widened. “That’s actually true. He was living off my salary while pretending to be a big shot.”

“Exactly,” Chloe said. “And Sophia? She built her entire influencer career on being authentic and relatable. But what if people found out she was faking it the whole time? That her ‘perfect life’ was just a carefully curated lie?”

Emma’s mind raced. This could work – Liam and Sophia had built their reputations on lies, and if those lies were exposed, their carefully constructed personas would crumble.

“But how do we prove it?” Emma asked. “I mean, I know it’s true, but we need evidence.”

“I’ve been working on that,” Chloe said, pulling out her phone. “I found someone who might have information about Liam’s finances – a former client who caught him in a lie about his commission. And I also found a former assistant of Sophia’s who was fired for ‘being too honest’ about Sophia’s fake lifestyle.”

Emma’s heart skipped a beat. This was it – the leverage they needed to fight back.

“Let’s reach out to them,” Emma said, her confidence growing. “See what they know.”

That afternoon, Emma and Chloe met with Liam’s former client, a middle-aged woman named Barbara who had discovered that Liam had undercharged her on purpose to make himself look more successful than he was. “He told me he was doing me a favor,” Barbara explained over coffee. “But then I found out from another agent that he should have charged me twice as much. He was losing money on purpose just to build his reputation.”

Emma took notes furiously, her mind already racing with possibilities. This was exactly the kind of information they needed – proof that Liam was a fraud.

“And Sophia’s assistant?” Emma asked.

“I can introduce you,” Barbara said. “Her name is Jessica, and she has copies of emails showing that Sophia fakes her reviews, buys her followers, and even stages her ‘perfect’ lifestyle for Instagram.”

Emma’s jaw dropped. This was even better than she had hoped for. Sophia had built her entire career on lies, and now Emma had proof.

The next day, Emma and Chloe met with Jessica, a young woman who looked exhausted but determined. “I kept everything,” Jessica said, pulling out a stack of printed emails. “Emails where Sophia admits to faking reviews, screenshots of her buying followers, even a spreadsheet of all the products she’s promoted without actually using them.”

Emma’s hands trembled as she looked through the evidence. This was enough to destroy Sophia’s career – proof that she was a fraud.

“What do you want me to do with this?” Jessica asked, her voice shaking. “I was scared to come forward, but I couldn’t let her keep getting away with it.”

“We’re going to use it,” Emma said, her voice steady. “We’re going to expose both of them for the frauds they are.”

Over the next few days, Emma and Chloe put their plan into action. They reached out to local journalists who specialized in exposing fraud, they contacted Sophia’s sponsors to alert them to the evidence, they even found a way to anonymously tip off Liam’s real estate board about his unethical practices.

Emma also worked double-time on her freelance projects, determined to prove her talent through her work. She poured her heart and soul into Ethan’s project, creating a brand identity that was modern, approachable, and authentic. She worked on the hotel rebrand, despite the client’s initial suspicions, and eventually won them over with her professionalism and creativity.

And slowly, the tide began to turn.

First, Sophia lost two major sponsorship deals after her sponsors received evidence that she was faking her reviews and buying followers. Then, Liam faced an investigation from the real estate board after an anonymous tip revealed his unethical commission practices. Both of them were suddenly on the defensive, trying to salvage their crumbling reputations.

“We need to do something,” Sophia said, pacing around Liam’s expensive apartment. “Emma is destroying us.”

Liam’s face was pale, his hands shaking. “I know. I can’t believe she found out about the commission thing. That was supposed to be my secret.”

“We need to find a way to stop her,” Sophia said. “Maybe we can threaten her? Or find something to use against Ethan?”

But before they could hatch another plan, disaster struck. A local journalist published an exposé on Liam’s real estate practices, revealing that he had been undercharging clients to build his reputation. The article went viral, and suddenly Liam was the laughingstock of Seattle’s real estate community.

And Sophia’s situation was even worse. Her former assistant went public with evidence that Sophia faked her entire influencer career – the fake reviews, the bought followers, the staged lifestyle. Social media turned against her, with hashtags like #SophiaIsAFake trending across platforms.

Within days, both Liam and Sophia had lost most of their clients, their sponsors, and their social media following. They were ruined – completely and utterly.

Emma watched from her apartment, feeling a surge of satisfaction she hadn’t expected. She had won. They had tried to destroy her, but she had fought back and exposed them for the frauds they were.

“We did it,” Chloe said, hugging her tightly. “You did it, Emma. You stood up to them and won.”

“I couldn’t have done it without you,” Emma said, tears streaming down her face. “Thank you for believing in me.”

“Always,” Chloe said, squeezing her hand. “Now, let’s celebrate!”

They popped open a bottle of champagne and toasted to Emma’s victory. For the first time in months, Emma felt like she could finally breathe – the weight of Liam and Sophia’s betrayal lifted from her shoulders.

The next day, Emma received an email from Ethan: “I saw the articles about Liam and Sophia. I’m so glad you stood up to them. You’re incredibly brave, Emma. I’d love to take you out to celebrate – dinner tonight? My treat.”

Emma hesitated. She wasn’t ready for anything romantic, but she couldn’t deny that she enjoyed Ethan’s company. And after everything that had happened, she deserved a night out.

“Okay,” she typed back. “Dinner sounds great.”

That evening, Emma dressed carefully – wearing the yellow sweater again, paired with dark jeans and comfortable boots. She felt like herself again, confident and ready to face whatever came next.

Ethan picked her up in his vintage convertible, and they drove to a small Italian restaurant in Capitol Hill. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, with candlelight and soft music playing in the background.

“I’m really proud of you, Emma,” Ethan said over pasta. “Standing up to Liam and Sophia like that – that took guts.”

“Thanks,” Emma said, swirling her wine glass. “It wasn’t easy, but I knew I had to do it. I couldn’t let them destroy my career.”

“They underestimated you,” Ethan said, his eyes meeting hers. “They thought you were just some sweet, boring girl who wouldn’t fight back. But you proved them wrong.”

Emma smiled, feeling a warm glow of satisfaction. Ethan was right – Liam and Sophia had underestimated her. They had seen her as weak, as someone they could control. But they were wrong.

The rest of the dinner passed in a blur of good food and easy conversation. Emma found herself relaxing more and more, enjoying Ethan’s company without feeling pressured or anxious. For the first time in a long time, she felt like she could just be herself.

At the end of the night, Ethan drove her home, parking in front of their apartment building. “I had a great time tonight,” he said, turning to face her. “I hope we can do this again soon.”

“Me too,” Emma said, and she meant it. “Thank you for dinner, Ethan.”

“Anytime,” he said, leaning in to kiss her on the cheek. “Goodnight, Emma.”

As Ethan drove away, Emma walked up to the apartment, feeling lighter than she had in months. She had stood up to Liam and Sophia, she had won, and she was finally moving forward with her life.

But little did she know, Liam and Sophia were far from done. They had lost their reputations, their clients, their sponsors – but they still had each other, and they were determined to destroy Emma once and for all.

And they were about to make their final move.
